Rules: 

• Dogs allowed on leash or under voice command on all trails 
• Bikes are not allowed on hiking only trails 
• Authorized vehicles may be present at any time on all double-track roads and pathways 
• Motorized vehicles are prohibited on all trails  
• Active forestry may be occurring at any time 
• Overnight camping is prohibited 
• Carry out all litter, including pet waste.

Located at 1782 U.S. Route 2 in Rumford Point, Mystery Mountain features an easy, 1.5 mile out and back hiking trail, and the Sweet Fern Road, a high-quality woods road that connects to the trail at the halfway point.

From the parking area, the Mystery Mountain trail gradually gains elevation through a recently harvested forest stand before crossing the end of the Sweet Fern Road. It then ascends via switchbacks up a rocky hemlock-dotted ridge. The trail travels to two viewpoints overlooking Rumford Point, Sunday River Resort and the Presidential Range to the west. The trail ends at the second viewpoint, which is marked by signage. The trail is marked with blue flagging tape and rock cairns.

The trail is named Mystery Mountain due to the fact that the name of the mountain is… well, a mystery! Best to embrace the unknown.

The connection: Mystery Mountain is located on the 67-acre tract of Chadbourne Forestlands. In 2020, the property was sold along with nearly 15,000 acres of Chadbourne Tree Farm land to The Conservation Fund, with Inland Woods + Trails acting as recreation manager. By upgrading this trail in 2021, IWT added sustainable features to a decades-old (and beloved!) neighborhood trail and solidified access to more hikers and walkers in the River Valley area.
